MUSAICA TO PERFORM IN THIRD SUNDAY SERIES
The Third Sunday Concert Series at
Christ Episcopal Church in Covington will host Musaica on Sunday, February 17 at
5 p.m.
The concert is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts,
Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in
cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the St.
Tammany Arts Commission.
Musaica was founded by a group of musicians from the Louisiana Philharmonic
Orchestra and Loyola University faculty in the fall of 2006. Their goal is to
present a variety of eclectic and entertaining chamber music performances in
numerous locations throughout the Greater New Orleans area to reach the most
listeners. The Third Sunday concert marks the group’s debut on the Northshore.
Core members of Musaica are Cathy Anderson, Bruce Owen, Judith Armistead
Fitzpatrick, David Anderson, Yuki Tanaka, Yui Asano, Stephanie Thompson and John
Reeks. They will be joined for this program by Sarah Schettler, Hannah Yim,
Janeta Mavrova, Ila Rondeau, Andrew Dunn, Kate Withrow, Dmitri Vychko and Ben
Atherholt.
Musaica has been nominated for two Big Easy awards: Best Chamber Music and Best
Performance of New Classical Music (Contemporary) composed by the ensemble’s
bassist, David Anderson.
For their performance at Christ Church, Musaica will present an all-American
program consisting of works by Leonard Bernstein (Sonata for Clarinet and
Piano), Samuel Barber (Adagio for Strings), Aaron Copland (Appalachian Spring),
and an original piece by their bassist David Anderson (Seven Doublebass Duos).
Anderson, a professional double bassist, joined the Louisiana Philharmonic
Orchestra in 1996 as principal bass. He has performed and recorded regularly
with orchestras including the Louisville Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra. Since 1994, he served as principal bassist in the Britt Festival
Orchestra in Oregon and has performed extensively with ensembles including the
Aspen Festival, Chautauqua Festival, Colorado Philharmonic, Colorado Music
Festival, the LaSalle Quartet and as a soloist with Richard Stoltzman, Gene
Bertoncini, Nigel Kennedy, and Bobby McFerrin. A composer as well as a
performer, Anderson has published bass duets and quartets, including a bass
quartet that was performed to acclaim at the Chamber Music Festival at Indiana
University in 1993. He has been with the Loyola University College of Music
faculty since 2003.
All concerts in the Third Sunday series are free, open to the public, and
followed by a reception where the audience can meet the performers.
Christ Church is located at 120 S. New Hampshire in Covington at the entrance to
