THIRD SUNDAY CONCERT FOR APRIL
The Third Sunday Concert Series at Christ Episcopal Church in Covington will host cellist Dennis Parker and pianist Willis Delony on Sunday, April 20 at 5 p.m. The program will feature works of Schubert, Foss, Stravinsky and Granados.
Parker is Professor of Cello and String Chamber Music at the Louisiana State University School of Music. A former member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Parker has also served as Principal Cellist of the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He has recently recorded for DVD the first complete performance of David Popper's "High School of Cello Playing" and is the author of the accompanying manual, "Popper Manifesto". He has also released CD's with the Centaur label: Cello Matters features crossover music for cello and piano by Liduino Pitombeira, Daniel Schnyder, David Baker, and Astor Piazzolla; Uplifting Discoveries from a Generation Lost is a recording of chamber music by composers who perished in the Holocaust (Erwin Schulhoff, Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann and Hans Krasa). Volume 1 of Stolen Sonatas with pianist, Jennifer Hayghe will be released in Spring 2007. This latest recording includes his own transcriptions of Debussy’s Sonata for Violin, Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute, and Enesco’s Sonata No.3 for Violin. This past season, Parker’s concert tours have taken him from Brasilia, Brazil, where he premiered the Cello Concerto by Walter Burle-Marx, to Nanjing, China, where he was soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, The President’s Chamber Orchestra in Prague, and performances at the International Music Festival in Campos do Jordao, Brazil. Willis Delony has won national and
international acclaim as a jazz and classical pianist, conductor, chamber
player, commercial composer, and arranger. His concert explorations of the jazz
and classical piano worlds are showcased in a recent recording of music by
American composers entitled Double Dance – Classical and Jazz Connections II,
which was released by Centaur Records in 2008. A previous album, also on the
Centaur label, is entitled A New World A' Comin' – Classical and Jazz
Connections. He is the Barineau Professor of Keyboard Studies and Professor of
Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Prior to his LSU
appointment in August of 2000, he taught for fourteen years on the music faculty
at Southeastern Louisiana University where he received the university's
President's Award for Excellence in Artistic Activity. He is also the recipient
of an Artist Fellowship by the Louisiana Division of the Arts in recognition of
his achievements in classical and jazz performance.
All concerts in the Third Sunday series are free, open to the public, and
followed by a reception where the audience can meet the performers.
