FIFTH ANNUAL LITURGICAL ARTS FESTIVAL
IN COVINGTON HUGE SUCCESS
The Fifth Annual Liturgical Arts Festival, co-hosted by St. Joseph Abbey
and Christ Episcopal Church in Covington, achieved its objective – uniting
Christians of different denominations through their common interests and
backgrounds in liturgical worship.
The celebration began on a Friday evening with an Ecumenical Prayer Service
at the Abbey led by musicians from area churches under the leadership of
Brother Beckett Ghioto O.S.B with organist Novice Thomas Wright. A reception
at the Student Refectory followed.
On Saturday, the Abbey hosted two workshops: Father Aelred Kavanagh O.S.B.
presented “The Glory on the Face of Christ: The Vision of Dom Gregory de
Wit, O.S. B.” and Father Sean Duggan, O.S.B. presented “The Liturgical Art
of Bach.”
On Sunday, the festival concluded with music by the New Orleans Black
Chorale at Christ Episcopal Church in Covington. Under the direction of John
Ware, the 30 voice choral group, which specializes in the work of
African-American composers and is dedicated to the preservation and
performance of American Negro Spirituals, performed “Singing Our Faith:
Favorite Hymns of the Ages.” Their concert was also the first concert in the
2003-2004 Season of Third Sunday Concerts.
