CHRIST CHURCH RECEIVES AWARD OF APPRECIATION

On Sunday, March 26, directors from Heifer Project International (HPI), a nonprofit organization that works worldwide to alleviate hunger and poverty through the gift of livestock and training in its care, visited Christ Episcopal Church in Covington to present an award to the parish for their exemplary contributions to the program for the past 5 years. Alice Mae Britt, Regional Director of Heifer Project International, and Frankie Reynolds, Education and Development Manager for Heifer Ranch, made the presentation.

The organization was founded by Dan West while serving as a Church of the Brethren relief worker during the Spanish Civil War. According to HPI, he was assigned to pass out powdered milk to the children on both sides of the conflict and grieved when the supply of milk ran out with children still waiting in line. It occurred to him that, "Not a cup, but a cow" was needed. This simple idea lives on as the cornerstone of HPI’s mission today.

Heifer banner acceptanceSince 1944, HPI has provided struggling families a way to become self-reliant for food and income. Through gifts of livestock and training, a family can obtain milk, eggs, wool and other income-producing benefits to feed, clothe and educate their children. Each gift multiplies, because every family that receives a Heifer Project animal promises to "pass on the gift" by giving one or more of their animal’s offspring to another family in need. HPI currently supports over 300 projects in 40 countries, including the United States.

Members and friends of Christ Church have supported Heifer Project International for the past five years by purchasing animals of all sizes and types in the name of friends or family as gifts for Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays, etc. If you would like to know more about this project, call the Christ Church office at 892-3177.
