GROUNDBREAKING AT CHRISTWOOD
Christwood in Covington recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the
addition of 10 private nursing suites and 18 freestanding cottages for
Independent Living. The additions to the Continuing Care Retirement Community
coincide with its tenth anniversary.
According to Executive Officer Steve Holzhalb, “Both of these projects are part
of our Master Plan and have been vetted carefully to assure the continuation of
the superior services the Northshore community has come to expect from
Christwood.” Christwood is the only retirement community in the area that offers
continuing care.
The Skilled Nursing area of Christwood presently consists of 20 private nursing
suites, dining room, nurses’ station, and large activity area. The project will
add 10 private nursing suites and increase the size of the dining room and all
other common areas. Also included in the plans is the renovation of the already
existing resident suites. The new addition will be placed in such a way as to
form a courtyard between Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living. Architects for the
Skilled Nursing addition are Fauntleroy & Latham; McMath Construction is the
contractor with Kieran Weldon Partners of FLA overseeing the work.
Freestanding cottages will add a new dimension to Independent Living at
Christwood. They will feature 2-3 bedrooms, large living/dining rooms, 2-car
garages, and functional corridors for use as libraries or art galleries.
Residents will have a choice of three spacious floor plans. They will range in
size from 1800 to 2200 square feet. Architects for the Independent Cottages are
V2 + Rome Architecture and Interiors. Christwood currently has 119 Independent
Living apartments, one- two- and three-bedroom styles, with nine different floor
plans. The apartments feature 9-foot ceilings, emergency call systems, bay
windows, balconies or patios, individually controlled heating and air
conditioning, kitchens with built-ins, and safety designed tubs and showers.
“McMath Construction, our contractor, has secured the requisite permits. Our
architects, Fauntleroy & Latham for Skilled Nursing and V2 + Rome for the
Cottages, have designed state-of-the-art living areas in keeping with the
attractive, active lifestyle already enjoyed by Christwood residents, “
continued Holzhalb.
Anticipated completion of the project is mid 2006. “As a result of Katrina, a
true completion date is very difficult to nail down,” said Holzhalb. “But, we
are doing everything within our power to keep the project on track.”
