Katrina Relief

Christ Church, Covington, in partnership with Churches and individuals in many communities, has reached out to help rebuild a local charitable institution damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Caritas, a religious community that works among the poorest people in West Saint Tammany Parish, has long been a partner of Christ Church in local outreach work. The “Summer Experience” sponsored by Caritas in Covington and Hammond, as well as it’s “Early Learning Program” Montessori class in Abita Springs, have been supported by Christ Church over the years. When the community’s buildings in Abita Springs sustained roof damage in the storm, church members and Christ Church’s Vestry believed that they could help. The buildings were uninsured.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katerina, Christ Church was contacted by a number of churches with offers of help. Having sustained minimal damage to its own buildings, Christ Church focused its initial recovery efforts on making the Caritas buildings functional and ready for their important ongoing ministry in the community. Support from other churches was directed to the work at Caritas. Mission groups from Summitview Community Church, Greeley, Colorado helped to repair roofs, and groups from Christ Church, Woodbury, New Jersey helped to repair the damaged interiors. Institutions supporting the work financially include Christ Church, Woodbury; Church of the Good Shepherd, Columbia, South Carolina; St Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Spencertown, New York; Saint Luke’s Church, Des Moines, Iowa; and the University of the South.

Caritas member Barbara Bahlinger gave this quote, “Nothing is impossible to God when people work together for the common good”.
