Christ Church: Palm Sunday
2001
Over
450 persons attended Palm Sunday services at Christ Church this year.
Congregations in the morning and
evening joined in versions of the historic Palm Sunday liturgy, with the
striking contrast between the celebration of Christ’s triumphal liturgy
into Jerusalem, and the events of his crucifixion. The 11:00 Sung
Eucharist was preceded by the Palm Sunday Procession, which made its way
around Christ Church led by clergy, choir, and Lenten banners made by the
Sunday School. The 9:00 & 11:00 celebrations included the reading of
the Passion Gospel in which parts were taken by various members of the
congregation, and in which the congregation as a whole played the role of
the crowd and the conspirators against Jesus.
The late afternoon saw the celebration
of a quiet, meditative service of psalms and prayers in the Taize style.
Taize is a ecumenical monastic community in France, whose style of prayer
has inspired many followers. This Palm Sunday at Christ Church, songs were
sung in the darkened Church illuminated by candlelight, followed by
periods of silence, in the presence of an icon of Christ Enthroned. The
Taize Prayer Committee at Christ Church plans more services along the same
lines.
The church was beautifully decorated
for the morning services by members of the Altar Flower Guild. It was an
outstanding Palm Sunday at Christ Church.
Details of Holy Week services can be
found in the Illuminare posted on this site.
We hope you will join us in celebrating the Lord’s Death and
Resurrection this Holy Week and Easter. |
